2022.01.28 02:00 CaptainShadow Seeing a lot of love/hate for certain cast members - so here's a behind the scenes on the casting process to show how tough it is.
Heads up: This is gonna be a long post. I'm a comedian who is very fortunate to know some cast & writers who have been on the show, as well as knowing a lottttt of people who have come close or went through the audition process (myself included). So I thought it would be fun to let you guys in on just how difficult it is to even be seen in front of Lorne + name drop some incredible talent that almost made the show but slipped through the cracks.
First off - The Audition Process. You can get cast on the show a multitude of ways, but the most popular are having a series of auditions at the most notable improv, sketch, and stand up theaters. For improv and sketch you're looking at Second City Chicago, (formerly) iO Chicago, the Annoyance Theater, UCB, and Groundlings. For stand up I'm not as savvy at, but from what I've heard it's primarily the New York and LA clubs mixed with previous skills writing on shows. You can also audition as one of two things: Writer or Performer. This will determine how you want to form your audition.
It should also be noted that each of these places cater to a different set of skills. Groundlings is known for its characters and impression based comedians. Examples are Phil Hartman, John Lovitz, Kristen Wiig, Cheri Oteri, Will Ferrell, and current cast members Heidi Gardner, Chloe Fineman, and Mikey Day.
Second City is where you'll get an equal mix of writers and performers. Past cast include Jason Sudeikis, Tim Robinson, and current cast like Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong (all of which were mainstage cast members - already a feat in itself and can take some performers 10 years of touring work to get).
There are some exceptions to the rule as well, mainly those who have been acting for years or were on comparable shows. Kate McKinnon was scouted from the Big Gay Sketch Show, Kyle and Beck were scouted from their viral videos, Sarah Squirm was doing a pretty intense variety show that got cult status in Chicago, and Kenan was a child actor with very early comedic chops.
I don't know all the ins and outs of every places auditions, but here is just a taste of what the iO Chicago one was: iO has one of the biggest track records for casting out of all the theaters. Some of the titans of SNL have come out of there - Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, and so on. Over the years they dwindled it down and changed some things, but overall it's stayed relatively the same. You get 5 minutes... Just 5 minutes to show off your skills. And you are competing against about 200 people for a 12 person spot in front of the head writers at SNL (not even the screen test level). In 2019 I went through this process which they call the "iO Showcase" or the "SNL Showcase". Originally there were only 2 days during the week for auditions, but they opened up a few Sunday slots. If you got the Sunday slot... You were basically screwed. Why? Because the person who determined your fate, Charna Helpburn, was absent from the Sunday shows. I got a Sunday slot... Didn't get to move forward. And when I mentioned it afterward to Charna I got the saddest response, "Oh, I would've vetted for you." (insert me banging my head against a wall - c'est la vie) She was the co-owner of iO, along with Del Close (remind to share some crazy stories about him later). She has the final say of who goes in front of the writers on that last night of auditions (with a tiny bit of help from a small panel of her close confidants). If you don't make her laugh, you're out. If she doesn't see you audition, you're probably not going to go far. And if she can't remember you, even if your audition was amazing, you won't continue on. It's a toss up between luck, who you know, and talent. So already it's an uphill climb.
Of the 5 minutes you have for auditions you can set it up for your writing skills, performance skills, or both. AND, if you're paying attention to cast members leaving, you're also setting yourself up to fill a particular type. Example: It was speculated at the time it may be Kate's final season. So there were a lot of females gunning for characters and impressions.
An example of someone who went the writing route - Alison Gates audition included the "Teacher Fell" sketch. Later it was used for Kate to play on SNL.
But overall, you want to give them a decent amount to consider - a monologue that could work for the news desk, impressions of people that may be popular or that current cast cannot do, a sketch that could work with multiple people in mind or set up one particular cast member, and maybe some political satire or songs. And again... You get 5 minutes to fit all of this in. Just to show you how nuts it can get - I did 13 different voices/impressions, an opening monologue, sketch with multiple characters, and ended on a song. It's the Olympics of nervous breakdowns while trying to get laughs.
So say you did well the first round - you move onto a second round that cuts to 40(ish) people. And from your original 5 minutes, they want you to swap out half for new material. So you have to weigh what is your strongest material each round. After the 40 they drop to the 12. Of those 12 people, 9 times out of 10 they'll be resident cast members of the theater, Charna will know them well, and they are either being pushed upon the casting writers or it's their last attempt to audition.
What does that mean? There are limitations to how many times you can audition in front of the writers and (though it's not said) there basically is a cutoff age. Phil Hartman is one of the rarities of casting someone who is late 30's/early 40's. For the most part they're looking for young talent because they want them to stick around for that 7 year contract. And the reason why you can't audition multiple times in front of the writers is because a particular male performer (his name slips my mind) auditioned 6 TIMES because Charna pushed for him. The casting crew had to tell her "Stop putting this guy in front of us. We said no." And as retaliation they cut the ability to audition down, so anyone who has done it twice is basically SOL.
And it is a popularity contest. It happens at every theater, and it's life. If you are an introvert who doesn't hang around or know anyone - then there is no one vetting for you to go forward. They need to know the ins and outs of your performing and whether you can actually make it to audition in front of network affiliates.
And again, you're auditioning for a TYPE that is missing from SNL or they may want a backup of. So even if you're fucking amazing, you may get dropped after that Top 12 audition. From that group maybe 3 to 4 people get asked to fly out to New York and do a screen test or have their writing packet looked at. And that's just from that one theater. There are about a dozen or so around the country, so you're back to being in the top 40 or so to audition in front of Lorne and the head writers at 30 Rock. From that group about 1/4 get asked to come back and either repeat their audition or bring other material. Oh... And if writers saw you at the top 12 like iO, you'll need new material when you hit New York. They want fresh material constantly, because that's what's expected when you're on the show.
And from that tiny group that gets to go in front of Lorne once or twice, you do a screen test. Then from that they cut it down even more to figure out who should write and who can be a new player.
BUT! There's more... What happens if you are supposed to be taking over someone's spot, and that person changes their mind last minute to stay on the show? Well, that happened to Jet Eveleth. She is renowned in Chicago as being one of the best, if not the best, female improvisers in the nation. She was my coach for an improv troupe, I've taken her workshops, and let me tell ya... She's the real deal. By far the most inventive and amazing performer I've seen in years. Her and Susan Messing are the literal queens of improvisational theater. And... She was supposed to take over and be the next Kristen Wiig. Her first audition they said she reminded them too much of Amy Poehler. The 2nd time she auditioned she did a bit about a scarf wrapped up like she was cradling a baby, and then when she dropped it and it showed it was just a scarf she started freaking out screaming and crying, breaking the 4th wall and realizing it was all a lie. Doesn't sound funny explaining it, but if you have ever seen Jet perform you'd be dying laughing. Anyhow, she was at the contract signing. Kristen had a day or two before confirming her leaving the show and at the very last minute she stayed on. And Jet was let go from being on the show. And when Kristen did leave, they had a couple of new cast members come on but realized that none of them were comparable to her work. I believe Jet had signed up for a possible tv show in LA at the time, and was pretty burnt by SNL, so they scouted Kate and wanted her... But they couldn't afford her at the time. And the rumor is that's why Paul Brittain and some other cast were let go mid season, so they could use the extra money to keep Kate on the show.
And that's just a smidgen of the chaos you have to face just to audition. So at the very least, give the current cast some credit for making it through this. And for those who were able to bypass the system - good on them. I wouldn't wish the vetting process to anyone on a good day. It is a hell of a lot of fun, but it's serious dedication to writing and perfecting your comedic timing. And when they actually get to the show it's 10 x's more hectic.
Feel free to ask me questions about other people who missed the SNL casting or anything else I may be able to relay. :)

2022.01.28 02:00 AnarchyLaBlanc Binding; My WIP magic system
The idea for this magic system is that there is an energy that exists that is responsible for the ability of all things to change. It determines what an object is, how it was, and how it will change. This energy is called thread due to its threadlike structure and its nature of knotting up with other thread, creating reactions.
Binding is a magic system based on weaving thread together to combine objects, people or locations together to some degree or another to allow for various effects.
There are several requirements for binding and the requirements increase the more completely one binds the two things. To start with one requires a fragment, a shard of the dead gods used to touch thread; the more complete the binding the larger the fragment. Another thing is an understanding of the two things; the more complex the understanding the more complete the binding can be. A memory of the two faces may work for partial bindings, but a more complete binding will require a more complete picture. Finally, the two things need to share certain aspects. Two like things are easier to bind than two unlike things.
Some of the effects are as follows.
A partial binding, the lowest form of binding requires little, but also can only do little. This binding can be achieved with a memory of the person's face, a small fragment, and any random object. When one of the two bound things experiences something, so will the other. If you light the random object on fire, the person it is bound to will feel a warmth. If you stab the random object, the person might feel a sting.
An intermediate binding can accomplish a bit more. With the person's full name, a larger fragment, and a doll fashioned to be similar to the person, one may cause some significant damage. What happens to the doll will happen to the person. If you light the doll on fire, the person will burst into flame. Cut the doll the person will bleed out.
A difficult binding can turn someone into one's slave. With a strong memory of the taste of their blood, a large fragment, and another person or oneself, one can control the every action of the person they are linked with as if they were moving their own limbs.
A true binding is by far the hardest to achieve. No human could comprehend the amount of knowledge needed of the chosen objects. There is no fragment known to be large enough for such a feat of magic. And no two things are so similar as to meet the requirements to be combined. However, it is believed that it can be done, however, the binding would need to constantly be rewoven as it would quickly unravel. With this in mind, the effect of a true binding is to mix the traits perfectly of the two things to turn them into one with the traits of both. Whether this is true or not is only known by the gods.
Again, this is a work in progress, so any thoughts are appreciated.

2022.01.28 02:00 fralvk Fuel tank for DSM 1G 1.8L
I’ve been pushing off fixing/replacing my rusty fuel tank. I haven’t had time to assess how bad it is but it looks like a leak at the seam. I’ve been driving with less than 6 gals of fuel at a time since i saw the small puddle of gas underneath the car.
I’ve spent weeks looking for a used tank but they are almost impossible to source locally and the ones under 100 miles away look like a gamble.. OEM is almost 1k with shipping :(
i need help deciding if I should try fixing it with tank repair products( metal tank but i have no welding skills), brining it it and having a skilled mechanic sort out this problem for me or taking a chance with a used tank.
Any suggestions? i feel like i’ll end up breaking a lot if the rusted bits which is deterring me form trying to drop the tank.
